David Andrew Pacoe, 59, of Lititz, was driving dark colored Audi sedan at a high rate of speed when he slammed into a tractor-trailer at the intersection of North Railroad Avenue and Gristmill Road in Earl Township around 1:13 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 12, according to the releases.
Before that happened, at 11:55 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 11, officers with the New Holland Police Department had stopped him for speeding on East Main Street in New Holland Borough.
The encounter went as follows:
"Officers approached the vehicle and received the driver’s identification information. The officers then returned to their police vehicles, ran the driver’s information, and discovered an active warrant for the driver for a Threat of Mass Violence. Officers also learned that this vehicle was a suspect vehicle in a Protection From Abuse Violation that had just occurred within a neighboring agency. As officers re-approached the car, the driver put up the window and fled the scene. Officers pursued the subject who was travelling at a high rate of speed with no lights visible. Officers momentarily lost sight of the vehicle."
After that officers came upon the fiery crash and quickly pulled Pacoe from the Audi and gave him CPR. Ultimately he passed away from multiple traumatic injuries at 1:58 on Thursday, Sept. 12, according to the coroner.
The coroner ruled his death an accident and the scene cleared around 4:30 a.m. The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured. The crash remains under investigation.
In addition to the warrant for "Threat of Mass Violence", the PFA violated and related charges following a domestic violence call at his home; he also had an active case for driving under the influence at the highest in York County from March and was scheduled to enter a plea on Oct. 7, court records show.
